DANIEL R. SATRIANA, JR.

Dan's practice focuses particularly on employment and media law. He represents his clients in matters involving discrimination claims under Federal, Colorado and local law, violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act and Colorado Wage Claim Act, breach of employment agreements, including provisions of employee handbooks and policy manuals, as well as retaliatory discharge claims. Dan also has great depth of experience in litigating other claims that arise from cessation of the employer/employee relationship including defamation, invasion of privacy, negligent hiring and supervision. In addition, he represents his clients in matters involving enforcement of covenants not to compete and protection of trade secrets. His practice also includes representation of media clients in defamation claims. For the last 23 years, he has represented clients in some of the most significant cases in these areas of the law.

In addition to his very active litigation practice, Dan takes a risk management approach with his clients' employment issues, engaging in day-to-day advice and contact with his clients and ongoing work to evaluate his clients' handbooks, policies, procedures and human resources systems in order to minimize potential claims. To that end, he is actively involved in providing training and education programs for his clients in order to limit the frequency and severity of sexual harassment claims. He also presents seminars designed to provide practical instruction on how to promptly and thoroughly investigate claims of workplace harassment and discrimination. His practice also involves extensive work in auditing, drafting, and revising personnel manuals and employment policies and procedures for employers.

Dan lectures frequently to human resources personnel and personnel directors from companies in the public and private sectors. Topics addressed cover all aspects of the employment relationship such as exceptions to the "employment at will" doctrine; privacy issues including drug testing and polygraphs; drafting and proper usage of personnel manuals; libel and slander issues concerning the employment relation; wage and hour issues; protection of trade secrets and appropriate utilization of covenants not to compete; and discrimination issues including gender, race, national origin, sexual harassment and disability, as well as Family and Medical Leave Act issues.

A cross section of Dan's clients includes broadcasting, publishing, manufacturing, professional service, hospitality, food services and retail sales companies.
